School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2020–2021)
Nestled in an established neighborhood, rich with tradition, stands Mark Twain School, a 2015 California Honor Roll, 2014 Department of Education Green Ribbon, 2006 and 2019 California Distinguished School, and a 1999 U.S. Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Built in the mid-1930's to resemble a California mission complete with a working bell tower, Twain is truly a school which instills a genuine sense of pride and commitment shared by staff, parents, students, and community, many of whom are second and third generation.
Twain’s school mission is to "provide an all-encompassing, nurturing environment for the students which will enable youngsters to become successful, contributing members of society. We strive to promote academic success, physical well-being, self-esteem, self-reliance, critical thinking, an appreciation for the fine arts, and an understanding of the cultural and ethnic diversity in an ever-changing world."
Derived from Twain’s mission is the school-wide theme that is the foundation for our school culture and the focus of all programs that we have developed over the last several years. This theme is what we call the 3 R’s, "Respect, Responsibility, and Reflection through Communication and Cooperation ."
Inside the quaint exterior of the school, learning reflects a balance of basic skills and in-depth instruction. Articulated thematic units at each grade level foster the school-wide focus of developing "responsible learners, respectful contributors, and reflective thinkers." Through the integration of subjects across the curriculum, our students experience an authentic learning environment with high expectations for all. Twain's teachers are highly trained in the latest curriculum strategies, and they engage the children in sequential and developmental learning that nurtures student-motivated inquiry, investigation, and application. Our school currently has a 1:1 Chromebook to student ratio. Our students use these Chromebooks to work collaboratively with their peers, work on projects, and to create presentations.
It is clearly evident that the uniqueness of Twain's program is the result of a collaborative educational community, and we were recognized in 1997, 2002, 2006 and 2019 as one of the top schools in California. This is also reflected in our 1999 recognition as one of the top schools in the nation. In 2014, Twain was also recognized as a Green Ribbon Award Winner with the state of California. In 2015, Twain was recognized as a California Honor Roll school.
