School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2020–2021)
Hoover Middle School is located in the beautiful Lakewood Country Club area, and we are proud to serve students from throughout Long Beach and Lakewood. The mission of Hoover Middle School is to provide all students with a comprehensive educational program, in a cooperative and caring environment, which encourages students to strive for academic excellence and the development of personal qualities and skills necessary for success in life.
Our faculty and staff work as a team to offer a wide range of programs and activities to meet the needs and interests of our students. We are committed to the focus that all of us must be lifelong learners, and that the critical skill necessary to be a successful learner is the ability and desire to read. For that purpose, all of our teachers are teachers of reading.
Hoover students may also choose from a variety of classes offered through our excellent Elective Department. We feel strongly that middle school students need to explore their talents and gifts, and for this reason we strive to keep our elective classes open and accessible. Young minds are challenged and enriched in Art, Computer Education, Instrumental Music, Creative Writing, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA), and Drama.
All students have access to the core curriculum, including students in special programs like the Resource Specialist Program. The ALPS program (Accelerated Learning and Performance by Students) is specially designed for the gifted, talented and high achieving students.
