Opportunities for Parental Involvement (School Year 2020–2021)

STREAM invites parents to volunteer during the school year so they can participate in various aspects of their child(ren)'s education. These experiences can be anything from driving for a field trip to volunteering in a classroom/playground to serving on a committee. Opportunities to visit classes during the school day and field trips have been unavailable due to Covid-19.

STREAM has a School Site Council, Parent Advisory Committee, Parent Club, and to governing board positions for parent representative and these have been held virtually during this school year.

STREAM holds a Back to School/Meet the Teacher event on the night prior to the first day of school to ensure everyone has opportunity to meet their teachers and hear about the curricular emphasis and classroom expectations for the year. Further, STREAM holds a Parent/Teacher conference during a full week in the fall to provide opportunity for teacher and parent(s) to meet to discuss academic and social concerns or victories. Parents are also encouraged to stay in contact with teachers via email or phone, or parent portal (Aeries) to track progress. The school also posts updates about school events on the school website and Facebook page, as well as via email and flyers. Classroom teachers also use newsletters, flyers, email, and class websites to inform parents of opportunities for participation. Beyond all of this, STREAM also holds monthly Student of the Month assemblies, three Honor Roll and Perfect Attendance assemblies, and two Showcase events each year. We also hold a Family Science Night in the fall and a Family Maker night in the spring each year. These have been held virtually this school year due to Covid-19.

School Safety Plan (School Year 2020–2021)

STREAM Charter School
CRISIS RESPONSE PLAN

updated and board approved 2/26/2020

updated and board approved 6/17/2020

A. Mitigation and Prevention
1. The goal of mitigation is to decrease the need for response as opposed to increasing response capability. STREAM will hold safety meetings as a part of staff meetings. Safety issues are dealt with promptly.

STREAM will conduct an annual safety audit. Any items that need to be addressed will betaken care of promptly by the director and custodians. Examples of items that are addressed include:
• Bookshelves, file cabinets, and freestanding cupboards are bolted to the wall or arranged to support each other
• Heavy items are removed from the tops of bookshelves and cupboards
• Ceilings, overhead lights, and air ducts are secured to the structure of the building

STREAM collaborates with city and county emergency responders, including local public health administrators, when planning for local hazards. The State-approved Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS) and the National Incident Command System(NIMS) guidelines are used when updating the school emergency and disaster preparedness plans. The emergency response team works in planning or recommending procedures to be followed.

The Safety Plan is reviewed annually. As issues arise, the plan is reviewed and updates occur. Parents and staff are involved with input and review.

2. School Safety Plan
a. The School Safety Plan will be reviewed by the Board at the beginning of each school year. Any changes suggested by parents or staff will be reviewed and changes made accordingly. Any recommended changes will be brought to the attention of the Board.
b. The safety committee will meet to review any safety concerns brought by parents, students, or staff members. Each item will be given a recommended course of correction.

B. Preparedness
1. Good planning will facilitate a rapid, coordinated, effective response when a crisis occurs.

STREAM’s safety plan encompasses site specific issues as well as a city or county disaster. The plan is reviewed by staff and parents. STREAM will also explore the opportunity to have an emergency response team within the community to meet and assist with a crisis plan.

STREAM conducts monthly fire drills and bi-annual lock down and earthquake drills. A record of each drill is kept in the office.

STREAM has established a procedure to account for all students during a crisis. Visitors and any auxiliary personnel sign in when on the school campus. This allows us to know who is on campus at all times, and to account for everyone in the case of a disaster or an evacuation.

STREAM has a map identifying the location and shut off valves for gas, electric, water, and cable in Knox boxes, accessible to law enforcement and emergency responders.

In order to provide for the safety of students and staff, the Board authorizes the Director or designee to close the school, change the regular school day schedule, or take any necessary action when adverse weather conditions or emergencies warrant. Such decisions will be made in conjunction with local authorities and/or utilities. Notification are made by email and the STREAM website and Facebook page.

STREAM maintains a website where any emergency information and updates can be posted quickly, and changed as needed during an emergency to keep the public informed. Telephone trees are in place and STREAM updates and provides a master phone list for staff annually.

2. STREAM conducts fire drills each month and lock down and earthquake drills twice each year. The drills will be conducted at different times of the day to allow students to participate from changing areas of the campus and will include alternate situations in case of exit blockage. Dates, times, and duration of drills will be recorded and kept in the school office.

Emergency and medical supplies will be kept in the office with open access to staff members before, during, and after school hours. A nurse will be available by phone in case of emergency. A nurse will help coordinate ordering and distribution of such supplies.

Safety meetings will take place including the director, secretary, and staff members. The team will review any concerns brought by students, parents, or staff members and plan a course of correction for each item. Situations may be resolved through staff intervention, custodial maintenance, or by contract.

C. Response
1. The Incident Commander will determine whether a crisis exists and, if so, the type of crisis, the location, and the magnitude. As soon as an emergency has been identified, emergency responders are called. Even if the incident has been resolved by the time they arrive, the goal is to minimize the risk of injury and damage. Teachers take roll to ensure that all students are present and strive to keep students calm to facilitate whatever orderly response is necessary.

When a crisis occurs, STREAM will establish a “command post”. The Command Post will be equipped with maps of the campus, facilities and hazards in the area, an enrollment sheet for the current year, First Aid supplies, and other tools necessary to manage the emergency response activities during an incident. Each teacher has a first aid kit in the classroom to treat any minor injuries, or to take in case of an evacuation.

During a crisis, STREAM will communicate with the school community as well as the community at large. STREAM will use the channel of communication identified in the plan. For instance, all information released to the media and public will come from the office.

The crisis team should communicate regularly with staff members who are managing students. At some point, families will also need to know when and where their children will be released. Often student release will be accomplished before complete resolution of a crisis.

In the event of a need to evacuate the site, teachers will take with them their safety binder, which contains the safety plan, as well as contact information and any medical information for the students in their class.

STREAM has a Crisis Response Team which consists of:
Incident Commander, Situation Status Team: Director
Communication, Accountability & Release: Dean of Students, Office & Records Managers
First Aid Team: Records Manager, Office and Records Managers and Office Clerk
Assembly/Shelter, Construction/Engineering: Lead Teacher and Music Teacher
Search/Rescue Team: PE Teacher and ASP Coordinator
Crisis Intervention Team: Special Education Director and Resource Teacher
Food/Water Supply Team: Food Manager and I.S. Aide
Record Keeping: Records Manager and Office Manager

The Incident Commander will determine which members of the crisis response team need to be contacted and begin contacting them immediately. The office manager will assist. Information of a sensitive nature will be kept to a minimum over the phone and will be communicated in person. BCOE will be contacted for assistance when needed.

STREAM has a plan for primary and secondary command post, evacuation routes, crisis center, first aid, shelter and feeding, as well as reunion areas.
