About Our School
WE GROW LEARNERS.
The Santa Barbara Community Academy (SBCA), established in 1999 as a public school of choice, serves kindergarten through sixth-grade students. The Academy
is open to all families that reside within the Santa Barbara Elementary School Districts. If requests exceed spaces a waiting list is maintained to determine
enrollment.
Our vision is to cultivate curiosity and develop skilled learners through connected and meaningful learning experiences that empower students to solve problems and make a difference in the world.
Learning happens everywhere. Therefore, at SBCA, we support students in developing the skills, mindsets, and the desire to learn and acquire knowledge in allparts of life and with diverse people. We do this by developing the academic, social-emotional, creative, and physical components that encompass the wholechild. Through integrated learning experiences that incorporate science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM), and social-emotional learning, students develop the skills that allow them to be independent and life-long learners.
Strong reading and writing skills are vital for our students to have as they enter junior high. Therefore, we emphasize a balanced approach to literacy that includesphonics, extended time to read and write in all content areas, and time to engage in structured collaborative conversations.
As we strive toward cultivating curiosity and student agency, we also support students in developing the social and emotional skills and mindsets that allowstudents to grow as learners. We use restorative approaches to discipline, and morning circles are conducted in classrooms to support students and buildcommunity. In addition, we grow the whole child as students participate in art, music, dance, PE, and garden weekly. By focusing on both academics and socialemotional competencies, we cultivate adaptable, motivated, and skilled learners.
